Christmas Dinner 2007

Village Fun Day

New Life Church Hosts 70 for Christmas Day Lunch!
The traditional Woking Christmas Day Dinner this year was, as usual, at the Moorcroft Centre, Westfield.  70 guests, who would otherwise have spent Christmas alone, had a splendid meal and a most enjoyable day.

New Life Church Woking once again undertook responsibility for the event, which was supported by over 50 helpers, from New Life and other churches as well as other local people, who taxied guests to and from the meal, cooked, served and entertained.

The guests were joined by the Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr. Bryan Cross and Mrs Helen Cross, as well as the Senior Pastor of New Life Church and his wife, Andrew and Marilyn Kane - and they all rolled up their sleeves to help serve the meals!

After lunch, musical entertainment was provided by Tony Bushell, the Methold family and two of the regular guests, Ron and George Smithers, with the latter singing ‘old time’ songs known and enjoyed by many!

Organiser, Alan Willott, Community Co-ordinator at New Life Church, said,   “A lot of the guests made very appreciative comments to us: the event was only possible because of the fantastic team of willing volunteers!” Once again the event was kindly sponsored by Woking Lions with Woking Council providing free use of the Centre.

South Woking Community Fun Day 2007 - 14th July 2007

A second Fun Day was held on Saturday, 15 July, 2007 on St Peter’s Recreation Ground, Rydens Way, with about 20 local organisations joining in, including all the South Woking Churches.  It was opened by the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Woking.

This time there was a cycling theme and Woking Leisure Centre organised a Triathlon (cycling, run and a swim) as part of the Fun Day.  In addition, there were bouncy castles, roundabouts, music, competitions, side-shows, face painting, craft, tug of war, races, refreshments, etc.

How did it start?
The Gloster Road and Priors Croft Residents’ Association identified the need to promote more community
co-operation and joint activities in the South Woking area (Old Woking, Kingfield, Westfield and Barnsbury).  They asked New Life Church Woking to help in this by organising a Community Fun Day for July, 2006.
A Planning Group was set up to include New Life Church, St Peters Church, the Gloster Road and Priors Croft Residents’ Association, the Police, the Moorcroft Centre and Derek McCrum, Local Councillor for Westfield and Kingfield.

What next?

A third Fun Day is planned for Saturday, 12 July, 2008.
In addition, two websites have been established:  http://www.villagefunday.org and http://www.windowonwoking.org.uk/sites/southwokingcommunity (as part of the 'Windows on Woking' Woking Borough Council web-site).  A list of participating organisations will be added in the near future.  We hope to launch a South Woking Community Newsletter in due course.

If you can help with any of these activities, please contact New Life Church, or the New Life Church Co-ordinator, Alan Willott on 224317 or alan.willott@tesco.net
